Smita Patkar is an India-based watercolour artist whose work is deeply inspired by her
intimate connection with nature. Her paintings - primarily landscapes and florals,
capture the serenity, rhythm, and quiet beauty of the natural world. She is particularly
drawn to the fluidity and transparency of watercolours, a medium she describes as
meditative, calming, and soulful.
With an academic background in science, Smita holds an M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry and a
Post Graduate Diploma in Patent Laws. She began her professional journey in scientific
research, working on antisense nucleotides at NCL, followed by a successful career as a
Senior Patent Analyst. She was a partner at Alphonso Global Solutions LLP, a software
product development company. Despite her accomplished corporate path, her artistic
passion has remained a constant and evolving force.
Smita formally pursued her interest in art through basic and advanced watercolour
courses under renowned artist Milind Mulick in 2013. Since 2014, she has been rigorously
training under her Guru, Shri Vilas Kulkarni, continually refining her skills and
artistic voice.
Her work has received international recognition. Two of her paintings “Peace is Bliss”
and “Water Lilies Upside Down” were awarded Special Merit in international competitions
by Light, Space and Time Online Gallery in 2014. She was also featured as “Artist of the
Month” by Painter’s Online, UK, where her painting process was published in their
newsletter.
Over the years, Smita has participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions. She has
been part of multiple group shows with Gurukul artists at Balgandharv Kaladalan and has
received Special Merit Awards at the “Passion for Art” competition. She won third prize
in a state-level landscape competition by Artscapes, Mumbai, and showcased her work at
the prestigious “Naari Naarayani Dwitiya” exhibition at the Bombay Art Society.
Her international presence includes representing the India West Zone at the globally
renowned Fabriano Watercolour Exhibition in Italy (2023, 2024, 2026). She also presented
a live demonstration at an art gallery in Bangkok in 2024.
Beyond exhibitions, Smita believes in the healing power of art. She conducted a special
art therapy workshop for women on the occasion of Women’s Day in 2024, reflecting her
commitment to using art as a medium for emotional well-being and connection.
Through her work, Smita Patkar invites viewers to pause, breathe, and experience the
quiet joy and mindfulness that nature and watercolour so beautifully offer.
