Coming Full Circle

Dr. Manisha Patwardhan

Growing up in Dadar, Bombay, Camel Art Centre on Lady Jamshedji Road Mahim was where I bought my art supplies- Camel water colours, fabric colours & oil paints. I learnt oil painting & spent many happy hours immersed in colours, fabric & canvases.

Life after that was the pursuit of the coveted MBBS seat, followed by three decades devoted to medicine and family responsibilities. Art quietly moved into the background. Painting became a cherished memory. Art supplies dried out & a few paintings were misplaced over the years.

Yet some passions never truly disappear. I found my way back to painting in 2021–22 beginning with watercolour, believing it would be easier and faster to resume than oil painting. Watercolour has captivated me with its delicacy & transparency. But eventually, I felt the familiar pull of oil painting once again as there is something uniquely satisfying about the brush gliding across a canvas, building layers of colour, texture, and depth.

This painting is especially meaningful because the reference is from one of the arts books, I have treasured for nearly forty years. Through all the changes and responsibilities in life, I held on to these books. Somewhere inside, I always knew I would return to them one day. This painting thus is more than an artwork; it is a full-circle moment! A hobby paused but never abandoned!!
